Less a canon than a "round", this Canon in D belongs with the famous "La Folie" which many classical composers have arranged (Corelli is one example). A contemporary music theorist, Burney, described the round or passacaglia as precisely a depiction of the repetition of madness. At first I wondered at this severe judgment, but now we know its truth! Poor Pachelbel. His sense of humor is lost on us today.
