Need ideas: best bake sale items for Zed to make

Zed wants to go to El Salvador over spring break with a bunch of kids from Wesleyan and Vassar to do some volunteer work. He said he'd get the money together, and then I gave him half because I'm a doting mother, but he's hundreds of dollars short.

So he wants to do his own bake sale. He's actually able to cook, so this isn't a ludicrous notion. But he needs some bake-sale type recipes that:
  • Aren't too hard - also, not easy to burn
  • Aren't too delicate
  • Don't have very expensive ingredients
  • Will look delectable and irresistable to college kids

When my son was at UNC, he asked for my magic six-layer cookies often. I found out he was selling them for $1 each in his dorm (the little devil).
In a 9x13" pan, melt one stick of butter. Into that sprinkle evenly, 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs. On that pour a can of sweetened, condensed milk (I use non-fat). Into that, sprinkle 1/2 or more cups each of chocolate and butterscotch chips, and top with 1/2 cup of chopped nuts.
Bake at 350* for about 30 mins. Cool and slice into squares.

Peanut brittle. Individually wrapped brownies. You also need something salty - even just buy it and mark it up.... At some colleges student entrepreneurs have started a service where they will run these foods to your dorm room for a little extra money, at 10 at night, when you need them most. this has turned out to be very lucrative.

#1 - This recipe is way more complicated than Kenju's recipe, but they are the best cookies I have ever tasted and they always get demolished at parties. They used to be called Mayan Cookies but I changed their name to:

GALLETAS DE COCOLBOSH
(COCOLBOSH COOKIES)

1.5 cups all purpose flour
1.5 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. instant coffee
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
1/8 - 1/4 tsp. hot ground (habanero or cayenne) pepper
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temp.
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar (to roll cookies in)
1 large egg
2 tsp. vanilla
approx. 1/2 cup chocolate chips

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, coffee, black and cayenne peppers, and the cocoa powder.
- Using an electric mixer, beat the butter with 3/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well. Add the sifted dry ingredients and blend well. Wrap in plastic dough and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Lightly grease pan or (easier) line a baking pan with parchment or nonstick lining.
- Place remaining 1/4 sugar in a bowl. Roll a piece of dough about the size of a small walnut between your hands. Make an indentation in the middle and place 4 chocolate chips in the dent. Mold the dough around the chips to enclose them, press to seal. Roll the dough into a ball, roll in the sugar, and place on the sheet. Continue forming the rest of the dough and place on sheet about 3-4 inches apart.
- Bake for 8 minutes. Do not overbake. The cookies are best when still a little moist in the center.
Optional: Taste one, if it needs more zing lightly dust tops with more cayenne pepper.

Yield: approx. 30 cookies.

Warning: Overindulging may cause visions. Aphrodisiac, especially if ingested with any form of ginger (ginger ale, ginger "beer").

#2 - My friend Synthia buys boxed brownie mix, or No Pudge Fudge box mix, and adds diced dried fruit (apricots, etc.), dried berries, nuts, coconut, chocolate/white chocolate/butterscotch chips, in whatever combination/amount suits her fancy, and calls them Chocolate Succotash Brownies. They are easy, unusual and people love them.

I second the Rice Krispie Treats.

Also, brownies from that mix (can't remember the brand) that has the little can or packet of Hershey's syrup. Undercook the slightly, I think the minimum length of time, for maximum gooeyness. They're wonderful...... ummm.... am having a chocolate attack now at the thought of it ...

I found this by looking for bake sale items myself. But, here is a recipe that is easy as well.

Cake balls
Any cake mix mixed and baked
take baked cake and mix 1 can of frosting in with it. Form into balls set on a waxed cookie sheet and set in the ice box.
Take one package of almond bark and melt it on low heat. When throughly melted take your cake balls and submerge into the chocolate. Let cool on waxed cookie sheet. To dress these babies up you could drizzle white chocolate on the top.

You could also make almond bark dipped pretzles
Melt almond bark dip pretzel into it. Then drizzle with white chocolate, or sprinkle candy on the top. Place on waxed cookie sheet.
