Donkey fence progress.

I got up early this morning, picked up a bunch of cash and a lot of lunch food, and went down to the place where guys who need work hang out. There's a lot of trust involved in this process - I have to trust that they are just guys who need work, not psychokillers or thieves - they have to trust I will give them work that is safe and pay them fairly. I've done this a couple times before and it's worked out ok.

I love love love to see these fence posts go up and it's not me pounding them into the ground. They, in turn, were quite impressed when they realized I dug the post holes myself. "How did you do that?" "With the awful Little Beaver" I said proudly.

Wow! There's no turning back on your donkey quest now, Melinama!

The fence is coming along nicely. I like that the fence is pretty much invisible against the greenery, and the posts blend in with the tree trunks in the background. How peaceful...[sigh].

I've been thinking about the movie ''Field of Dreams''...''If you build it, they will come.'' I have no idea how much a good donkey or chicken costs. Are they expensive ? My dad used to raise pheasant peeps. He also had a flock of guinea hens that someone gave him and all of us grew to hate.

Ha! Your last sentence made me totally crack up. Why? I don't know, it's just hilarious for some reason. Nice job on the chicken coop. The buckeyes look pretty happy. I am so very impressed.

Hey Susanlynn, why did you hate the guinea hens?

Hey guys, thanks for your cheering words! I am afraid I've gone around the bend and this is how my insanity is expressing itself... but it's making me so happy... the donkeys I've been hearing about cost $300-800 but you can spend more. And sometimes people give them away (there's a guy in VA looking to give away his two donkeys because he doesn't have time to take care of them).

Melinama***I'm getting an idea for another telenovela here...''Three Chicks and a Jackass'' I'm pretty sure that AAron could play the lead , and we'd have a big selection to choose from for the 3 chicks. Sylvia, we all grew to hate the guinea hens because they looked and acted so weird. Have you ever seen any?--little tiny red heads that hold their little tiny peabrains and big darkfeathered bodies. They always stay in tight group formation, and ours roamed all over the farm like that making lots of noise. My father could never catch them to get rid of them. We figured out why someone gifted them to him...we think the benefactor wanted to rid himself of them and my father could never turn down anything free [thus, the several old refrigerators still in the barn.] Some people keep them as ''watch dogs'' because they are very skittish and make lots of noise at any movement or sound. I really can't remember what ever happened to them.

Ha ha! Three chicks and a jackass...I love it!

There are some guinea hens at a local farm and they are pretty stupid now that you mention it.

Melinama, maybe you have gone around the bend but I really admire what you're doing. I saw a lot of donkeys on my trip to South America and they were really cool. I think they are handy animals to have around.

Your journey is inspiring. Your words about trust will resonate in my head for a while.

Thanks for keeping the bar high.

Do you want any chicken-naming suggestions?

If we get to suggest chicken names, I would offer up the many telenovela heroines we have come to know and love/hate : Matilde, Hipolita, Gaviota...or the villainesses Minervaaaa, Isadora, Antonia, Bertha , Joselyn.
